NIL Studio Philosophy

NIL manifests our design philosophy. We believe every design should start at a brand new page. Experience can be accumulated, settled, absorbed, but should not be repeated. We wish every design can start at the NIL point, the very origin, where there is no memory or reference to any other precedents.

NIL Studio was established in 2014. The Directors and colleagues in the company have good experience in international projects in different scale and nature. We have a deep understanding of adapting architectural design professionally in different cultural settings. We have also attained many international and local awards both on personal and project levels. Our design and project execution ability has been well recognized.

The projects that we have been involved in are located

Billy came back to Hong Kong after studying Architecture in University of Sydney in 2000.  By then Hong Kong was in its low economic cycle but Billy saw big opportu-nities lying ahead in China.  During the early years, he worked in project for HKJC, Hang Seng Bank and gained experiences working with large corporations.  In later years, he redirected his focus back to the China market and completed Coco Park in Shenzhen, Posada Village in Tianjin and Pazhou Commercial Complex in Guangzhou, these projects were widely acclaimed and received numerous awards.  Apart from the built projects, he was also instrumental in international competitions in previous offices.   Recently, he is overlooking a 100,000sq.m. development project in Hong Kong consists of a 180m tower, a service apartment and a retail mall.  This is vitally important to the overall process of an architectural project believing getting the project built is as equally important as the design itself.

Design is a continuous process and is a product coming out of the interaction with the clients and collaborators.  “I don’t design a project for the ego of myself, it should fit for the purposes, for the needs and for the place.” However, it does not mean strictly follow the instructions of the clients.  “I always reference back to the starting point of the project (thus our name NIL), it’s the first principle and it is the guiding light which in the end lead us to the most suitable solution.”

Being born in Hong Kong, a mixed pot of both Western and Chinese cultures, was in itself an inspiration.  “I read books and magazines from everywhere, I find the technological edge of the Western and the sensibility of Chinese culture best describe what I do.  It is also inspiring to look at how people enjoy a space, how it becomes part of their lives.”  Travelling is also a constant source of new ideas and stimulation.
